The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) saw its share of global crude oil production edge up year on year to 36.7% in 2025, from 36.1% in 2024, according to its Annual Statistical Bulletin 2026 released on Wednesday.
Total world crude oil production rose by 2.24 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2025 from a year earlier to average 74.85 million bpd, the report showed.
OPEC's crude output accounted for the bulk of that increase, rising by 1.22 million bpd year on year, while production from non-OPEC oil-producing countries participating in the Declaration of Cooperation (DoC) increased 122,000 bpd.
Meanwhile, crude production from non-DoC countries rose by 896,000 bpd.
- Saudi Arabia and Libya lead gains
Among OPEC members, Saudi Arabia and Libya recorded the largest year-on-year increases in crude production.
OPEC heavyweight Saudi Arabia's crude output rose to around 9.48 million bpd in 2025, from an average of 8.95 million bpd in 2024, as the kingdom gradually unwound voluntary production cuts under the OPEC+ agreement and adjusted supply in line with improving market conditions and demand recovery.
Libya, home to Africa's largest proven crude oil reserves, increased output from 1.13 million bpd in 2024 to 1.37 million bpd in 2025, a rise of 236,000 bpd. The gains were supported by relatively improved security conditions in key oil regions and the resumption of production and exports from previously disrupted fields and terminals.
- Demand growth led by emerging economies
Global oil demand grew by 1.3 million bpd year on year to average 105.15 million bpd in 2025, with consumption rising across nearly all regions.
The strongest demand growth was recorded in non-OECD Asia, particularly China and India, as well as in Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.
Demand in OPEC member countries also remained firm, increasing by 171,000 bpd from a year earlier.
OPEC members exported an average of 19.85 million bpd of crude oil in 2025, up 846,000 bpd from 2024, with Asia accounting for the largest share at 14.79 million bpd.
Global proven crude oil reserves stood at 1.57 trillion barrels at the end of 2025, an increase of 7.3 billion barrels from the previous year. OPEC countries accounted for the majority of reserves, rising by 2.19 billion barrels to 1.24 trillion barrels.
