The British energy giant BP announced plans to lay off 10,000 employees amid the severe impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the energy sector.
In an e-mail, BP told its staff on Monday that around 15% would leave by the end of the year although the company had paused redundancies during the pandemic period.
BP's CEO Bernard Looney explained in the email to employees that the reason for the job cuts was the plummet of oil prices below a level the company needs to turn a profit.
"You are already aware that, beyond the clear human tragedy, there has been widespread economic fallout, along with consequences for our industry and our company," Looney said.
"We are spending much, much more than we make - I am talking millions of dollars, every day," he added.
BP has over 70,000 employees worldwide.
