Russia has announced plans to dramatically increase its liquefied natural gas (LNG) production from 33 million tons in 2023 to 110 million tons by the year 2030, according to a report by Russian news agency Tass.
The ambitious target that aims at bolstering Russia’s position in the global LNG market and diversifying its gas supplies was revealed by Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak.
According to Novak, the major increase in production will be distributed across Russia's key LNG clusters, with a planned increase to 110 million tons per year by 2030, which he said is already secured through projects that are either underway or in the pipeline.
The Yamal cluster, located in the Arctic region, is expected to see its output triple to 60 million tons by 2030, up from the current 20 million tons.
Similarly, the Baltic cluster is set to undergo a significant expansion, with production projected to grow more than sixfold to 15 million tons from a modest 2.2 million tons.
Furthermore, the Sakhalin cluster in Russia's Far East and the Murmansk cluster in the northwest are anticipated to increase production to 15 million tons and 20 million tons, respectively, marking substantial growth in these areas.
Highlighting the strategic importance of this expansion, Novak said that Russia aims to capture at least 15-20% of the global LNG market, a considerable jump from its current 8% share.
