The Dow Jones industrial average fell 223 points Monday on a late-day slide that carried over from last week’s losses.
Stocks continued their volatile movement as the Dow saw its fifth straight day of triple digit closings with just one in positive territory. Last week’s losses were the worst for the indices in the past two years.
The Dow recorded a 1.4 percent loss, to close at 16,321, its worst performance of the year after falling 335 points late last week.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 31 points, or 1.7 percent, to 1,874 while the Nasdaq lost 1.5 percent of its value, falling 62 points to close at 4,213.
Energy stocks fell nearly 3 percent – the highest fall in the market. Investors and analysts relate the drop to the continuing decline in the price of oil.
