Turkish stocks up at Wednesday close

ANKARA

Turkey's benchmark stock index ended Wednesday at 1,449.17 points, up 0.11% compared to the previous close.

After starting the day at 1,449.85 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index rose 1.58 points from 1,447.59 points at Tuesday's close.

During Wednesday's trading, the BIST 100 hovered between 1,445.69 points and 1,453.36 points, with 43 stocks on the index rising and 52 down compared to the previous close.

Closing the day with a market value of around 1 trillion Turkish liras ($118 billion), the benchmark index posted a daily trading volume of 13.6 billion liras ($1.58 billion).

The highest trading volumes were posted by flag carrier Turkish Airlines, private lender Garanti BBVA and real estate investment trust Emlak Konut.

Conglomerate GSD Holding was the best performer, with its shares up 4.59%, while stocks of Borusan Mannesmann, a prominent pipe manufacturer, saw the sharpest drop of 3.92%.

One ounce of gold sold for $1,889.65 by market close, down from $1,910.50, according to data from Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets.

The price of Brent oil was around $72.23 per barrel as of 6.00 p.m. local time (1500GMT) on Wednesday.
