ANKARA

Turkey's benchmark stock index went down 0.43 percent to close at 92,790.99 points on Wednesday. 

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index ended the day with a 398.28-point fall from Tuesday's close of 93,189.27 points, while it started the midweek trading day at 93,100.27 points.

The total market value of listed shares on the BIST 100 was 612.26 billion Turkish liras ($91.66 billion) at the close, while the total trade volume of the benchmark index was around 6.32 billion Turkish liras ($945 million).

The benchmark index hovered between 92,370.79 points and 93,719.45 points during trading hours, while 37 stocks on the BIST 100 rose, 57 fell, and six were flat compared to the previous close.

Among all sectors, the chemical petrol plastic sector index was the top gainer, up 1.63 percent, while the BIST sports index fell the most with a 2.20 percent decline.

Stocks of private equity firm Gozde Girisim (GOZDE) recorded the best performance with an 8.23-percent rise, and shares of real estate investment trust Ozderici (OZGYO) dropped the most on Wednesday, falling 5.12 percent.

The BIST 100's most-traded listed companies were national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, private lender Garanti Bankasi, prominent defense company Aselsan, leading petrochemicals producer Petkim, iron and steel producer Kardemir. 

One U.S. dollar traded for 6.6280 Turkish liras as of 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT) Wednesday, down from 6.6820 at the previous close. 

The euro/lira exchange rate was 7.7050 by market close, versus 7.7170 at Tuesday's close, and one British pound traded for 8.6080 Turkish liras, while the GBP/TRY rate was 8.5790 at the previous close. 

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, one ounce of gold traded for $1,193.10 as of 4.30 p.m. local time (1330GMT) Wednesday, while it was $1,193.00 at the previous close.

As of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT), the price of Brent oil stood at $77.31 per barrel -- hovering between $76.91 and $78.10 during Wednesday -- climbing from around $66 at the beginning of 2018.
