Turkey's defense industries chief on Friday rebuffed claims of delays in an indigenous battle tank project.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency’s Finance Desk, Ismail Demir said: “Negotiations for the contract have concluded and we could sign it even tomorrow.”

He said after the contract is signed, production of the Altay tank could start in 18 months.

Allegations that the project was halted or delayed are baseless," he stressed.

"There is work to reduce production costs, but there's no delay or cancellation."

Demir also said Turkey has been negotiating with companies and countries on making engines for the TF-X, a national combat aircraft.

"We want a local company at the core of the project," he added.

A company called TR Motor was founded in Turkey for indigenous engine production, he said.

The Pulat and Akkor system meant to provide short- and long-range active protection for tanks is also ready, Demir said.

"Negotiations are continuing with some countries to export our defense industry products," he said.

On Turkey's plan to buy Russia's S-400 missile defense system, Demir stated that delivery date -- July 2019 -- is unchanged.
