Tesla's Shanghai factory hit 4M vehicle production mark
US electric car company reaches mark at largest production facility outside US
BEIJING
Tesla announced Tuesday it surpassed the 4 million vehicle production threshold at its factory in Shanghai, China.
The company said that the vehicle rolled off the assembly line last night -- a Model Y L electric car.
It noted that it took more than 30 months to surpass the 1 million threshold at the factory, which opened in January 2019, but the increase in capacity has taken 14 months to reach 4 million vehicles.
The factory hit 2 million vehicles in September 2023, and 3 million in October 2024.
The number of cars produced at the Shanghai factory reached 675,000 in the first nine months of 2025, accounting for more than half of the US electric car company’s global vehicle production.
The Shanghai factory is the company's largest production facility outside the US. Vehicles produced there are exported to the Asia Pacific region and Europe, as well as China.
The factory boasts a 95% domestic presence in its industrial chain, and the majority of its suppliers are manufacturers in the Yangtze River Delta, on the outskirts of Shanghai.
