ANKARA
29.5 tons of gold worth 1.7 billion U.S. dollars have been mined from the ground in Turkey in 2012.
Gold production which had begun in the country in 2001 has been increasing every passing year. Gold production in Turkey, which had been 1.4 tons in 2001, rose to 8 tons in 2006, 11 tons in 2008, 14.5 tons in 2009 and 29.5 tons in 2012.
Gold produced in Turkey between 2001 and 2012 exceeded 136 tons.
Umit Akdur, chairperson of executive board of the Association of Gold Miners, told AA correspondent that 2 billion USD of investment has been made in the gold mining in Turkey in the past 20 years.
Akdur said that Turkey was of great importance in the world gold production, stating that they expected that 33 tons of gold would be mined in Turkey in 2013.
