Reutilization of municipal waste soars in EU28
Over 40 percent of municipal waste was reutilized in EU28 countries in 2012 with Germany topping the table for its recycling and composting.

Statistical authority, Eurostat, has released data showing that 42 percent of municipal waste was recycled or composted within the EU28 in 2012 compared to 18 percent in 1995.
According to Eurostat for every 492kg's of municipal waste generated per person in 2012 approximately 480kg's was treated, taking the EU28's treatment ratio to over 97 percent.
Waste generation per person was highest in Denmark at 668kg's while the Baltic states such as Latvia and Estonia were some of the lowest waste generating populations at under 400kg's per person.
Germany, Austria and Belgium topped the tables with more the 50 percent of their municipal waste, rubbish consisting of everyday items discarded by the public, recycled and composted while Romania put 99 percent of its waste into landfill.
