New York stock exchange closes Thursday higher

The New York Stock Exchange ended Thursday higher, buoyed by easing geopolitical tensions and data pointing to the resilience of the US economy.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.63%, or 306.78 points, closing Thursday at 49,384.01.
The Nasdaq increased 0.91%, or 211.20 points, to 23,436.02, while the S&P 500 added 0.55%, or 37.73 points, to 6,913.35.
The Volatility Index (VIX), also known as the "fear index," fell 6.86% to 15.74.
US President Donald Trump's decision to abandon tariffs on some European countries over Greenland and positive economic data contributed to the positive trend in the markets.
On Thursday, official figures showed that the US economy recorded its highest growth performance since the third quarter of 2023, growing by 4.4% in the third quarter of 2025, exceeding the market expectation of 4.3%.
The number of people filing for unemployment benefits for the first time in the week ending January 17 rose by 1,000 to 200,000 compared to the previous week, lower than forecasts.
