Nasdaq, S&P 500 close with gains while Dow ends in negative territory

ANKARA

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed higher Thursday, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average failed to recover from the previous day's losses and ended in negative territory.

The blue-chip Dow was down 60 points, or 0.17%, at 35,870. IBM and Walt Disney fell more than 1% each.

The S&P 500, on the other hand, closed up 15 points, or 0.34%, at 4,704 as Tesla increased 0.7%.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq added 72 points, or 0.45%, to finish at 15,993 despite Coinbase plummeting 6.6% as a major selloff in the crypto market continues.

After plunging to $56,592 earlier, Bitcoin was trading around $58,000 with a 4% loss.

While Bitcoin has lost $210 billion or 18% of its value since hitting an all-time high of $69,000 on Nov. 10, the latest selloff caused a wipeout in the cryptocurrency market of more than $500 billion in just eight days.

The VIX volatility index, known as the fear index, was up 2.1% to 17.47.

The yield on 10-year US Treasury notes, however, fell 1.26% to 1.584% and the dollar index lost 0.3% to 95.55.

Despite retreating below the critical $80 mark earlier, the price of Brent crude was up 1.1% at $81.17 per barrel. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude rose 1% to $78.36.

Precious metals were down, with gold shedding 0.36% to $1,860 an ounce and silver losing 1.1% to $24.81.
