BRUSSELS
EU greenhouse gas emissions in 2013 reached its lowest levels since 1990, the European Environment Agency said in its annual progress report Tuesday.
The greenhouse gas emissions in the 28-nation bloc fell by 1.8 percent in 2013 compared to 2012.
On October 24, EU leaders agreed on a deal for the bloc to cut 40 percent carbon emissions by 2030. The deal includes a binding agreement to have renewable energy account for at least 27 percent of the EU’s energy mix, and a target of at least 27 percent in energy savings.
However, environmentalists slammed the agreement and said it was "not good enough" in terms of boosting renewable energy.
"The global fight against climate change needs radical shock treatment, but what the EU is offering is, at best, a whiff of smelling salts," Greenpeace's Mahi Sideridou said in an earlier statement.
"Europe can and should do more to stop the most devastating impacts of climate change."
