ANKARA

Turkey's stock exchange saw a consolidated net profit of over 1.4 billion Turkish liras ($200 million) in 2020, posting record-high financial results.

The figure grew 43% year-on-year thanks to Borsa Istanbul's strong operational performance last year, according to a statement from the stock exchange on Thursday.

Operating revenues of Borsa Istanbul reached 2.5 billion Turkish liras ($357 million) in 2020.

Commenting on the report, Hakan Atilla, the managing director of the Istanbul Stock Exchange, said:"We reached the highest trading volumes and index values in our all markets last year."

There are four main markets in Borsa İstanbul: equity market, debt securities market, derivatives market and precious metals and diamond markets.

The number of investors in the stock exchange reached 2 million in 2020, rising 64% from the previous year.

Noting that all markets broke all-time high transaction volumes last year, the report underlined that equity market saw its peak at 64.1 billion liras ($8.4 billion) on Nov. 12, 2020.

Eight companies that made a total of 1.1 billion Turkish liras ($157 million) public offering were quoted in Borsa Istanbul last year, Atilla said, adding: "We have provided nearly 200 billion Turkish liras of financing through issuing 1,254 debt instruments."


Noting that Borsa Istanbul made a good start to 2021, Atilla said the profitability gained last year will be increased this year.

"In addition to the records in the number of investors and transaction volume, we see 2021 as a year when records will be broken in public offerings," he noted.
