The annual inflation rate in Australia was at 3.8% in the second quarter of this year, up from 3.6% from the previous quarter, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (Abs) revealed on Wednesday.

In the April-June period, both goods and services annual inflation ticked up, the Abs said while prices continued to rise for goods such as tobacco, new dwellings and automotive fuel.

Prices for fruit rose strongly this quarter on a quarterly basis, it added.

"Annual services inflation continued to be impacted by higher prices for rents and insurance," it said.

This quarter saw increases for private health insurance premiums, which are typically reviewed in April each year, it noted.
