Academy Awards: Mank leads with 10 nods
History is made as two female directors receive best director nominations

WASHINGTON
Mank, the dramatic re-telling of how screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz developed the screenplay for Citizen Kane, led all films on Monday with 10 nominations ahead of the 93rd Academy Awards, popularly known as The Oscars.
It was one of eight films selected for best picture. The other contenders include The Father, Judas, and the Black Messiah, Minari, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal, and the Trial of the Chicago 7.
All of those films except Emerald Fennell's Promising Young Woman received six nominations each. Promising Young Woman had five nods.
History was made as two female directors were put up for best director, including Fennell and Chloe Zhao for Nomadland. Only five female directors have been nominated for their directing in the Academy's more than 90-year history.
Zhao is the first female director of Asian heritage to have received a nomination.
Among the 20 people nominated for acting, nearly half are people of color in what marks a far cry from the traditionally largely white lineup. The best lead actor category consists of Riz Ahmed, Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, and Steven Yeun.
Boseman was nominated posthumously for his performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. The Black Panther star died in August after a long battle with colon cancer.
The best lead actress category is made up of Viola Davis, Andra Day, Vanessa Kirby, Frances McDormand, and Carey Mulligan.
