ISTANBUL
Below are the major arts and cultural events set to take place in Istanbul in January:
CONCERT
- Jazz with Fazil Say
Renowned Turkish pianist and composer Fazil Say's classical jazz concert will feature Turkish singer Serenad Bagcan at Kultur University on January 7, 2014.
- Academy of St Martin In The Fields - Joshua Bell
One of the finest chamber orchestras in the world, Academy of St Martin in the Fields, with over 500 recordings and with its unique arrangement that enables performances to be conducted in a chamber group or in a symphony orchestra, will be performing at Is Sanat Culture Center on January 8.
- Borusan Philharmonic Orchestra (BIPO) New Year’s Concert
In the season 2013-2014 BIPO will give a concert to classical music lovers with Maestro Sascha Goetzel as art director and Gurer Aykal as honorary conductor and Cigdem Soyarslan as soprano on January 9th at Lutfi Kirdar Anadolu Auditorium.
- Dostlar Neşet Ertaş Söylüyor (Friends Sing from Neset Ertas)
Turkish folk music singer and lyricist Neset Ertas who died in 2012 will be commemorated on January 10, 2014 at Is Sanat Culture Center.
- Istanbul Arabesque Project
Widely praised for their blend of arabesque and rock music, Istanbul Arabesque Project will perform at BKM Mutfak Stage on January 11.
- Yasmin Levy
Famous Israeli singer-songwriter of Judeo-Spanish music, Yasmin Levy will perform at Istanbul Congress Center's Harbiye Hall on January 11, 2014.
- Baba Zula
Turkish alternative music group BaBa ZuLa, which combines funk, electronic and folk music together, will be at KadikoySahne on January 16, 2014.
- Istanbul Soul Nights
Dance and have fun with "Hustle", "45", "Dance Electrik", "Bus Stop", "Boogaloo", "Funky Chicken", "Crazy Robot", "Shing-a-Ling" and "Soul Street Line Dance", "Soul Sendikasi" and "VJ De-Mode" at Babylon Lounge on January 25.
THEATHER
- Size Siddeti Anlatacagim (I am gonna explain violence to you)
With its intriguing theme, Size Siddeti Anlatacagim will be at Sahne Hal on January 20.
- Michelangelo
Michelangelo will be at Istanbul State Theather Uskudar Studio Stage on Jan. 7, 9, and 11.
- Yolcu
Nazim Hikmet's Yolcu with its exploration of people and their relationships who become devoid of news from outside their community and specifically knowledge of the 1921 war due to a defective telegraph wire on their railway line. The play runs at Kadikoy Haldun Taner on Jan. 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12.
- Hidirellez
A tale of gypsies who live by the river, Hidirellez will be at Umraniye Theather on Jan. 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12.
EXHIBITIONS
- Sophia Vari – Sculptures and Paintings
With colours inspired by the Mediterranean and monumental forms that are uniquely her own, Sophia Vari meets Turkish viewers for the first time at Pera Museum between October 9, 2013 and January 19, 2014.
- I’m Cross I’m not Playing
The “I’m Cross, I’m Not Playing” project is the story of six years that Naz Koktenturk experienced in Tarlabasi until the demolition of the neighbourhood. The project depicts the artist’s observations of lives of the people living in Tarlabaşı through black and white photos and collaborative stencil work with Ari Alpert. The exhibition will be on display until February 28 at the Rezan Has Museum.
- Michel Comte- “Fame”
The second solo show of Swiss internationally renowned Vogue magazine photographer Michel Comte. Fame covers a selection of Comte’s truly memorable works of film, art, show with stars, models, artists and actors, ‘Fame’ is to be held until 25 January 2014 at Elipsis Gallery
- Joan Miro
An exhibition of 60 works by Joan Miró, considered one of the 20th century’s most important artists, is being held at Istanbul’s Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Tophane-i Amire Culture and Arts Center until Jan 19.
