'Breaking Bad,' 'Modern Family' top shows at 2013 Emmys

The 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards honors the best series in primetime TV broadcasts in the US from June 1, 2012 until May 31, 2013

'Breaking Bad,' 'Modern Family' top shows at 2013 Emmys

LOS ANGELES (AA) - The United States (US) TV series "Breaking Bad" won the 2013 Emmy Award for "Outstanding Drama Series" while ABC’s "Modern Family" was granted the award of "Outstanding Comedy Series" for the fourth consecutive year.

Known as the television Oscars, the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, honoring the best series in primetime TV broadcasts in the US from June 1, 2012 until May 31, 2013, were held on Sunday, September 22 at the Nokia Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles, California.

The "Breaking Bad" series scored big at the Emmy Awards, claiming its first "Outstanding Drama Series" award just one week before its final episode.

Vince Gilligan, creator of "Breaking Bad," said “I didn’t expect this” in accepting the award.

At the night hosted by "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris, ABC’s "Modern Family" was chosen as "Outstanding Comedy Series" for the fourth consecutive year.

For the "Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series," Jeff Daniels was awarded the Emmy for his act as an idealist anchorman in “The Newsroom.” 

Claire Danes won a second consecutive Emmy for "Outstanding Lead Actress" for the Showtime drama, Homeland.

Jim Parsons was named "Outstanding Lead Comedy Actor" for his role as "Sheldon" in CBS’s "The Big Bang Theory," winning his third Emmy.

"Lead Actress" Julia Louis-Dreyfus took her second Emmy for her role as the US vice-president in HBO comedy "Veep."

Bobby Cannavale was named "Best Supporting Actor" for his role in "Boardwalk Empire" while Anna Gunn won the Emmy for "Best Supporting Actress."

Michael Douglas won the "Best Actor" award for his role as Liberace in "Behind the Candelabra," which secured three Emmys including "Best TV Movie."
