South Korea on Wednesday suspended loudspeaker broadcasts along the border with North Korea, Yonhap news reported.

The move by government of newly elected President Lee Jae-myung comes after the Democratic Party leader pledged to take steps to mend strained ties with Pyongyang.

The South Korean military had resumed the propaganda broadcasts last June after Pyongyang launched trash-carrying balloons across the border.

"The decision was made as part of efforts to carry out the promise of restoring inter-Korean trust and peace on the Korean Peninsula," said an official of South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

Bilateral ties between the two Koreas have stooped low since ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol took office in April 2022, and many pacts between the two have been scrapped.
