South Korea probes e-commerce giant Coupang over US headquarters-linked transactions: Report

ISTANBUL

South Korean tax authorities launched a probe into e-commerce firm Coupang and transactions linked to its US headquarters, Seoul-based Yonhap News reported Monday, citing industry sources.

The National Tax Service (NTS) sent an investigative team to Coupang’s Seoul headquarters, according to the report. The probe is being led by the NTS’ fourth investigation bureau, which handles special audits involving suspected slush funds and tax evasion, alongside routine inspections.

While the investigation is officially centered on Coupang Fulfillment Services, the company’s logistics unit, sources reportedly said it was expected to extend to the retailer's broader financial activities.

The probe also reportedly involves the international transactions investigation bureau, which is looking into profit-shifting schemes at the group level, including transactions tied to Coupang's US operations.

Last month, Coupang revealed that the personal information of 33.7 million customers was compromised, including names, phone numbers, email addresses, and delivery information, leading to heightened concerns from lawmakers regarding the company's practices.
