Pakistan says Bangladesh fully capable of addressing its issues
Foreign Ministry spokesman says death sentence of former fugitive premier Sheikh Hasina is internal matter of Bangladesh
ISLAMABAD
Pakistan said Friday that the death sentence handed down to former fugitive Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is an “internal matter” of Bangladesh, stressing that Dhaka is “fully capable” of handling its own affairs.
Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman Tahir Hussain Andrabi told reporters in Islamabad that he would not offer a detailed comment on the ruling.
“This is an internal matter of Bangladesh. The people of Bangladesh are fully capable of addressing their issues in accordance with their own democratic and constitutional processes,” he said.
When asked again about the death sentence issued against Hasina, who is currently residing in India, Andrabi reiterated that it is an “internal matter” of Bangladesh.
His remarks followed a Bangladeshi court ruling on Monday that sentenced the former prime minister to death in absentia over crimes against humanity allegedly committed during last year’s uprising against her government.
More than 1,400 people were killed during the crackdown on the student-led movement that ended the Awami League’s 15-year rule.
