North Korea fires multiple short-range ballistic missiles: South Korean military

ANKARA

North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles Wednesday in a northeastern direction, the South Korean military said.

In a statement, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it detected the launches around 6.50 a.m. (2150GMT Tuesday) from the North's Kaechon area in South Pyongan Province north of the capital Pyongyang, and the missiles flew about 400 kilometers (248 miles), Seoul-based Yonhap News reported.

However, the South Korean JCS did not share further details.

Last week, the Japanese government said that Pyongyang fired several ballistic missiles, which were believed to have landed outside Japan's exclusive economic zone in the Sea of Japan, with no damage reported to aircraft or vessels, the first since July 1.

The latest missile launch came after North Korea’s Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui left for an official visit to Russia on Monday.
