North Korea has officially registered for the upcoming World Shooting Championships in Changwon, South Korea, according to the event's organizing committee Monday.
Led by 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Kim Song-guk, 12 athletes from the North will participate in 14 events from August 31 to September 15.
"With North Korea's participation, our world championships will generate more interest and allow us to send a message of peace," Huh Sung-moo, mayor of Changwon and the co-president of the organizing committee, was quoted as telling reporters by Yonhap News Agency.
It represents the latest in a series of opportunities for inter-Korean sports diplomacy following the North's participation when the South hosted the Winter Olympics in February.
The neighbors are also fielding unified teams at the Asian Games in Indonesia next month.
