Myanmar: 8 police injured during bomb training accident

NAY PYI TAW, Myanmar

Eight police were injured in Myanmar after an explosion went off on Tuesday during a bomb disposal training session in Myanmar's has, an official said.

The accident occurred in the country's central Mandalay region when an officer stepped on a plastic M14 anti-personnel mine that had been mistaken for a decoy designated for training.

"Eight including [a] trainer got injured, and were taken to the hospital," an officer said in the capital Nay Pyi Taw.

The officer, who asked not to be named as he was not authorized to speak to media, added that none of those injured were in critical condition.

"As it was designed for demonstration purposes, explosion was not that strong," he told Anadolu Agency by phone.

It is still unclear what kind of action would be taken against the trainer, he said.

The three-week long bomb disposal training began on Monday for local police in the Mandalay region.
