Millions of Indonesians attended special Eid al-Fitr prayers in their best outfits across the country on Sunday despite reports of a suspected terror attack in the north.
A police officer was killed when two suspected militants attacked a police checkpost in Medan City in North Sumatra Province early Sunday, according to Indonesian media.
President Joko Widodo attended Eid prayers along with thousands of Muslims at Istiqlal Mosque in the capital Jakarta amid tight security.
Following morning prayers, people across Indonesia asked for forgiveness from family members, neighbors and friends for any past wrong doings and then gathered to eat traditional dishes.
The special Eid delicacies include opor ayam (chicken curry), sambal goreng ati (spicy beef liver) and semur daging (stewed meat) that is usually served along with ketupat, which is a dumpling made from rice packed inside a diamond-shaped container woven from palm leaf.
Church administrators in the country also rescheduled their Sunday Mass since it coincided with Eid prayers and also congratulated their Muslim citizens on the special occasion.
