Japan's ruling bloc is on the course to lose its majority in the upper house in the July 20 crucial elections, a poll conducted by Tokyo-based Kyodo News showed Tuesday.

Several minor parties that have gained ground amid household struggles with the rising cost-of-living crisis appear to perform well in the upcoming House of Councilors elections.

With responses from more than 43,000 voters, the poll showed the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LPD) can secure fewer than 40 of the 125 seats up for grabs, a result that would likely trigger calls for Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's resignation.

The main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ) maintained stable support, whereas smaller parties are banking on populist economic agendas.

The Democratic Party for the People (DPP) and Sanseito party are poised to make strong gains that could increase their influence.

The LDP and its junior coalition partner Komeito need to win 50 seats combined to retain a majority in a 248-seat chamber.

Despite the ruling bloc's weak position, the poll suggested the largest opposition CDPJ would make only modest gains from its current 22 seats and is unlikely to reach 30.

The DPP and Sanseito party, which are attracting voters with their "Japanese First" banner of nationalist and anti-establishment policies, could win more seats than they currently hold in the upper chamber.

Other small parties also appear set to make gains, with the Conservative Party of Japan expected to win its first two seats in the upper house.
