Japan mulls action against erring defense officials

ISTANBUL

Japan is mulling disciplinary action against senior defense officials as well as some members of Self-Defense Force (SDF) for mishandling confidential information, and intimidating subordinates.

A growing number of scandals have led to increase in public distrust towards the SDF and the ministry, Tokyo-based Kyodo News reported.

It said some members of the SDF's maritime branch are suspected of having fraudulently received allowances for diving training and duty, prompting further criticism of the SDF.

Besides, senior officials, including deputy minister-level officers, have been accused of intimidating subordinates, causing psychological distress.

The Japanese Defense Ministry is expected to take action later this week.
