Indonesia reports highest daily rise in COVID-19 cases

JAKARTA 

Indonesia on Saturday confirmed 533 new cases of the novel coronavirus, the biggest daily rise so far, raising the tally to 13,645.

"As many as 113 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours. So far, we have recorded 2,607 recoveries," said Health Ministry official Achmad Yurianto in a press conference.

Meanwhile, the number of new deaths due to the disease rose by 16, bringing the death toll to 959.

The confirmed cases of COVID-10 increased to 5,556 in the capital Jakarta, 1,437 in West Java, 1,419 in East Java and 306 in Bali.

After originating in China last December, the virus has spread to at least 187 countries and regions. Europe and the US are currently the worst-hit regions.

The pandemic has killed over 275,000 worldwide, with more than 3.95 million infections, while recoveries have exceeded 1.33 million, according to figures compiled by US-based Johns Hopkins University.
