Indonesia celebrates 74th Independence Day

Country proclaimed independence in 1945 after being colonized by Dutch for 350 years, later by Japan for 3 and half years

JAKARTA

Indonesia on Saturday celebrated its 74th Independence Day on Saturday.

The country had proclaimed its independence on Aug. 17, 1945, after being colonized by the Dutch forces for 350 years and later by Japan for three and half years.

Marking the Independence Day, President Joko Widodo said the country would continue to work for welfare of its people.

Joko Widodo, who was elected for second term, called on Indonesian people to unite following presidential elections in April 2019.
