Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday sent a congratulatory message to his Indian counterpart on India’s 77th Republic Day, describing Beijing and New Delhi as “good neighbors, friends and partners,” state media reported.

In his message to Indian President Droupadi Murmu, Xi said China-India relations have continued to improve and develop over the past year, which aligns with the fundamental interests of both countries and their people, and carries significant importance for world peace and prosperity, Beijing-based Xinhua News reported.

Xi referred to China and India as the “dragon and the elephant dancing together,” and voiced hope that both sides will adhere to the important consensus that they are "partners for cooperation and opportunities for development.”

The message comes as Asia’s two largest countries continue efforts to normalize ties following US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, and nearly four years of border tensions, which had led to the 2020 border clashes that killed at least 20 Indian soldiers.

After the 2020 clashes, India banned Chinese-owned social media platform TikTok and imposed restrictions on Chinese investment in China following the skirmish.

Despite the tensions, bilateral trade between the two neighbours has continued and reached about $130 billion.

In October 2025, India and China resumed direct flights after five years of suspension.

India marked Republic Day on Monday with a military parade showcasing its military prowess that includes missiles, warplanes, newly-raised units, and other weapon systems.

President of the EU Council Antonio Costa, and president of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, attended the celebrations as chief guests.
