China issues red alert for Typhoon Mangkhut

BEIJING

China has issued a red alert Sunday in Hong Kong and Macao regions as the Typhoon Mangkhut hit the country.

The National Meteorological Center has upgraded the alert to the highest level for the 22nd typhoon of the year.

The southern provinces of Guangdong, Fujian Hainan were also included in the alert.

According to the South China Morning Post, the typhoon -- which came from the Philippines -- caused floods in Hong Kong and Macao.

The visuals on show that the storm uprooted trees, ripped off roofs and swept people off their feet.

The speed of the typhoon has reached 165 kilometers per hour (103 miles per hour) in southern Chinese provinces. It has brought fishery, transportation education to a halt in the area.
