China on Monday congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva following his reelection to a historic fourth term and expressed readiness to strengthen bilateral ties.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told reporters that Beijing has noted the outcome of Brazil's presidential election, won by Lula, and congratulated him on his victory.
China wished Brazil "even greater achievements in national development under the leadership" of Lula, Guo said.
"We are ready to promote the China-Brazil community with a shared future," he added.
Lula defeated Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro in a presidential runoff, winning 51.79% of valid votes, or more than 60 million ballots, compared with Bolsonaro's 48.21%.
"China respects the choice of the Brazilian people," Guo said when asked to comment on Bolsonaro's refusal to concede defeat.
Lula's victory in Sunday's election was historic, securing him a fourth term as president, a first for any Brazilian politician.
