Conscription law promulgated in 2006 remains unimplemented

ISTANBUL
Cambodia will implement military conscription next year, Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Monday.
The conscription law was promulgated on Dec. 22, 2006, but has yet to be implemented, the daily Khmer Times reported.
Before enforcement, the law will undergo “significant legislation revisions, particularly concerning the duration of mandatory service,” he added.
The conscription period is expected to be extended to two years for all Cambodian citizens aged between 18 and 30. For women, the service will remain voluntary.
