The interim government in Bangladesh formed a committee Thursday to investigate the violence that left four dead in the southern district of Gopalganj after fighting between law enforcement officers and followers of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, according to a statement.

This committee has been mandated to conduct a thorough inquiry and submit findings to the office of the head of the interim government Muhammad Yunus, within two weeks, it said.

A police report blamed Hasina’s Awami League party and its banned student wing, the Bangladesh Chhatra League, for attacks centering around a rally of the youth-led political party in the district.

Authorities extended a curfew for an indefinite period to restore law and order in the district.

Joint security forces arrested 14 people for their alleged involvement in the fighting.

The fighting erupted in Gopalganj after the newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP), whose youth leaders spearheaded the uprising against Hasina, joined a rally in Gopalganj as part of a national “Mourning Day” on Wednesday.

It marked the anniversary of the July uprising that led to the fall of Hasina’s government last year.

Hasina, who is currently in exile in India, is charged with crimes against humanity after being accused of ordering a crackdown against anti-government protests that left more than 1,400 people dead.
