At least 7 killed in Philippines earthquake

ANKARA

At least seven people were killed and several other wounded in a major earthquake that recently struck the Philippines, state-run media said on Saturday.

The country National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that seven people had been reported killed so far, while two others remain missing in the Sarangani region of Davao Occidental province, according to Philippines News Agency.

Authorities, as well as rescue and medical teams already in the affected areas, said that some 32 units of infrastructure were damaged in the city of Davao.

The earthquake struck on Friday in the southern parts of Philippines.

It was reported at around 0814GMT at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), said the US Geological Survey.

According to the PHIVOLCS, the country’s institute for monitoring and mitigation of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunami, the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.2 but later it was downgraded to magnitude 6.8.
