Sri Lanka's army and police on Sunday rescued some 180 university students who were stranded in the country's central Hanthana mountain range during a hike the previous day.

According to a spokesman for Kandy police, the rescued students from Kelaniya University in western Rangama province, started a hike on Saturday morning and lost the track on their way back due to fog and rain, local news website InfoLanka reported.

Hanthana, located in central highlands of Sri Lanka, is a popular hiking destination for hikers.
