ANKARA

At least one person was killed and dozens more were injured when tornadoes struck Eastern China’s Shandong province on Friday, the Global Times reported.

Local authorities in Dongming county so far confirmed one death and 79 injuries. The extent of the damage is still being assessed, the state-run daily reported.

Emergency response measures have been activated in the affected region.

Thousands evacuate due to dike breach

Separately, thousands of people had to evacuate due to a dike breach in Dongting Lake in Hunan province, Central China due to unsuccessful emergency repairs following unprecedented rainfall, Xinhua reported.

The relocation of approximately 5,000 residents was verified by the local flood control department, said the official state news agency.

Dongting is China’s second-largest freshwater lake.
