TRADE UNIONS DECIDE TO CELEBRATE MAY 1 IN TAKSIM SQUARE
ANKARA - Trade unions decided to celebrate this year's May Day at Taksim Square, Istanbul.
A statement by Turkish Confederation of Labor Unions (Turk-Is) said on Friday that chairpersons of labor unions Turk-Is, Hak-Is, DISK, Memur-Sen, KESK, TMMOB, TTB, TEB, TUED, TURMOB gathered at Turk-Is HQ in Ankara on Thursday.
The statement said that in Thursday's gathering labor unions decided to hold May Day celebrations jointly this year in Istanbul's Taksim Square.
On May 1, 2010 tens of thousands of union members gathered for the first legally-sanctioned May Day celebration in Istanbul's central Taksim Square in 30 years. The square was closed to rallies after May Day of 1977, also known as Bloody May Day, when 37 people were killed after unknown assailants opened fire on the crowd.
