US to seek additional NATO funding for weapons program supporting Ukraine: Report

The US is preparing to ask NATO allies to provide additional funding for a key weapons-delivery program supporting Ukraine as Washington seeks to close a multibillion-dollar funding gap amid its continued military assistance to Kyiv, Bloomberg reported Monday.

People familiar with the discussions told Bloomberg that the request could come as soon as this month and would seek additional contributions to NATO's Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), an initiative that allows allied countries to finance the purchase of American-made weapons for Ukraine.

The US has already signaled to some NATO allies that it intends to seek additional funding, according to the report. However, the precise amount Washington plans to request remains unclear.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing private deliberations, said the program faces a funding shortfall of approximately $2 billion for weapons packages that have already received approval.

Despite the funding gap, the United States has continued delivering weapons to Ukraine before receiving full financial contributions from its allies. The shortfall could increase further if the Pentagon authorizes additional weapons shipments, the people said.

PURL has become a central component of NATO's efforts to strengthen Ukraine's military capabilities. Under the arrangement, participating allies contribute money to purchase US weapons and military equipment, which are subsequently delivered to Kyiv.

Previous deliveries through the initiative have included critical air defense systems and other military equipment needed by Ukrainian forces amid Russia's ongoing war.

The planned funding request also signals that US military support for Ukraine continues despite political tensions between President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

According to Bloomberg, the Pentagon has maintained weapons deliveries even as allied contributions have struggled to keep pace with the flow of American military equipment.
