WASHINGTON

President Joe Biden announced Thursday that the US will designate Colombia as one of its major non-NATO allies.

“That's exactly what you are, a major, major non-NATO ally. And this is a recognition of the unique and close relationship between our countries," Biden said at the White House while hosting Colombian President Ivan Duque.

"We're going to continue to stand together and build peace, recognition, and God willing, a prosperous future for all Colombians," he added.

The designation affords certain benefits, particularly in the areas of defense and defense finance and trade, according to the State Department’s website.

It does not include security commitments like those granted to NATO members under the alliance Article Five principle.
