The US State Department announced sanctions on 11 officials from the Russian Defense Ministry and related material sectors of the Russian economy for the war in Ukraine.

The agency said in a statement late Monday that "the world has been transfixed as Russia has perpetrated a premeditated, unprovoked, and unjustified attack on Ukraine" and it is "continuing to impose severe costs on Russian military leaders."

Individuals sanctioned include Russian deputy defense ministers Aleksey Krivoruchko, Timur Ivanov, Yunus-bek Evkurov, Yuriy Sadovenko, Nikolay Pankov, Ruslan Tsalikov, Gennady Zhidko and Dmitry Bulgakov, who is also in charge of logistic matters.

Others include Viktor Zolotov, general of the army and commander-in-chief of Russia’s National Guard troops; Dmitry Shugaev, the director of the Russian defense ministry's Federal Service for Military Technical Cooperation and Alexander Mikheev, the Director General of Rosoboronexport, which is Russia’s state-controlled intermediary that carries out foreign trade with respect to military goods.

"These persons will be added to the list of Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons and all property and interests in property of the individuals above that are in the United States or in the possession or control of U.S. persons are blocked and must be reported to the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)," according to the State Department.

Meanwhile, the US Treasury Department imposed fresh sanctions on Tuesday against Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko who is aiding Russian President Vladimir Putin in his war against Ukraine.

"Today's designations demonstrate the United States will continue to impose concrete and significant consequences for those who engage in corruption or are connected to gross violations of human rights," said the Office of Foreign Assets Control Director Andrea Gacki.
