Hundreds of Muslims gathered early Wednesday for Eid al-Adha prayers at the Diyanet Center of America mosque in the US state of Maryland.

The mosque, which offers religious services for Muslims in the Washington-Maryland-Virginia area, is located in Lanham, just outside the US capital. It hosted not only Turks but Muslims from different countries and backgrounds.

Worshippers bowed their heads in prayer at 8 a.m. local time. A second service was offered at 9.30 am. Following prayers, worshippers wished "Eid Mubarak," or blessed holiday, to each other and had breakfast in the Islamic center's complex.

In New Jersey, Muslims gathered at the Diyanet Mosque of Bergen in Cliffside Park, and were served breakfast after prayers.

Muslims across the US also held Eid prayers at parks, including the Overpeck County Park in New Jersey.

Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, is celebrated by Muslims as one of Islam’s most significant festivals.

It is the second major festival after Eid al-Fitr -- celebrated at the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting.

This significant religious observance commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's act of obedience to God when he was willing to sacrifice his son. Muslims mark the occasion with prayer, feasting and acts of charity.
