A California man on Monday was sentenced to 15 years in prison and lifetime supervision upon release after he pleaded guilty to attempting to support Daesh and lying about his passport to join the group in Syria.

Prosecutors sought a 20-year sentence for Adam Dandach, who the government says lied in an attempt to obtain a replacement passport, but probation officials recommended 15 years, according to media reports.

The defendant's lawyer argued that Daesh was not a terrorist organization when Dandach planned his trip to Syria to join a charity convoy in 2013.

The U.S. terror list includes a 2004 entry for Al Qaeda in Iraq that the government contends morphed into the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, another name for Daesh.
