US House speaker delays vote on Trump budget blueprint

WASHINGTON

US House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday delayed a vote on the Republican budget blueprint to unlock President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda.

Amid opposition from conservatives, Johnson told reporters that the House would vote on the measure “probably" on Thursday.

“This is part of the process. This is a very constructive process. I’m very optimistic about the outcome of this one big, beautiful bill, and this is just one of the steps in getting there," he said.

Lawmakers were originally scheduled to vote on the Senate-passed measure on Wednesday evening.

The budget, which supports Trump’s key domestic initiatives, has sparked concerns from some Republicans who prefer a more stringent House version.

Some lawmakers are concerned that the Senate plan, which calls for just $4 billion in spending cuts, doesn’t go far enough in reducing federal spending.

Republican Congressman Chip Roy said he cannot support the current Senate budget plan.

"It will make the Inflation Tax on American families worse & undermine the Trump agenda. It ‘instructs’ the Senate to INCREASE deficits by failing to limit spending (only $4BB) while simultaneously reducing tax revenues (even adjusting for growth)," Roy said on X.

On Tuesday, Trump hosted hardline Republicans for a meeting at the White House.

Taking to his Truth Social platform, Trump urged House Republicans to pass the bill.

"Republicans, it is more important now, than ever, that we pass THE ONE, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL. The USA will Soar like never before!!!" he said.
