Sinners, the supernatural thriller by director Ryan Coogler, made history Thursday when it received 16 Academy Award nominations.

The film surpassed the previous record of 14 nominations by three different films, and outpaced its closest competitor, Leonardo DiCaprio’s thriller One Battle After Another, which received 13 nods.

Sinners is nominated in categories including best picture and director, as well as leading actor, supporting actor for British actor Delroy Lindo, supporting actress for British-Nigerian actor Wunmi Mosaku and the Academy’s inaugural casting prize.

The film stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers who open a blues club in 1930s Mississippi, while confronting racism and vampires. It has grossed $368 million worldwide.

Oscar winners will be announced in Hollywood on March 15.
