US condemns attack at Iraqi airbase: White House

WASHINGTON

The US condemned a recent attack on an Iraqi airbase that injured American personnel, the White House said Tuesday.

"The United States condemns the attack on the Al Asad base yesterday. Our hearts go out to the service members who were injured, and we are hoping for a speedy recovery," spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.

Her remarks came after seven US personnel were injured Monday in a suspected rocket attack against US and coalition forces at the Ain al-Asad Airbase in western Iraq.

US defense chief Lloyd Austin and his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant agreed Monday in a telephone call that the "Iran-aligned militia attack marked a dangerous escalation and demonstrated Iran's destabilizing role in the region.”

"We will respond to any attack against our personnel in a manner and place of our choosing," said Jean-Pierre.

US President Joe Biden was briefed on the attack, she said.
