WASHINGTON

Senior officials from the US and key international partners reaffirmed their commitment Tuesday to support Libya’s progress on a path toward greater unity, security, stability and prosperity during a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The Libya Senior Officials Meeting, chaired by the US, brought together representatives from Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates and the UK.

According to a statement from the State Department, participants expressed support for the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and efforts to advance a political roadmap, and to facilitate meaningful dialogue among a broad range of Libyan parties.

The meeting "highlighted the importance of Libyan east-west security integration to facilitate increased Libyan contribution to regional stability and security,” it said.

It noted the steps enabled by a 2025 modification of the UN arms embargo that allowed for joint training and technical assistance.

"Participants agreed that coordinated international efforts to support economic stability, create opportunities for investment, and safeguard the country’s resources would serve as a driver for greater unity and prosperity," it said.

Libya remains divided between two rival administrations: one led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh in Tripoli, which controls the west of the country, and another appointed by the House of Representatives (parliament) in early 2022, led by Osama Hammad and based in Benghazi, which governs the east and much of the south.
