Trump vows to 'save' Afghans facing deportation from UAE
US president promises intervention after reports emerge of UAE deal to turn over Afghan refugees to Taliban

ISTANBUL
US President Donald Trump pledged Sunday to help Afghan refugees facing deportation from the United Arab Emirates following reports that UAE officials plan to turn them over to the Taliban.
"I will try to save them, starting right now," Trump wrote on Truth Social, sharing a news report about the situation.
According to a Just the News report that Trump shared alongside his message, UAE officials appeared without warning at a refugee camp in Abu Dhabi to inform 32 Afghan men, women, and children, who sought refuge in the country, of the planned deportation.
It said camp officials confiscated passports of the group, which has been held at a complex for four years.
The Taliban seized power in August 2021 following the collapse of Afghan government forces and the US withdrawal.
Richard Bennett, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, on Saturday expressed "deep alarm" over the reports, urging the UAE government to halt deportation plans "immediately."
"Afghanistan is not safe, and those forced to return are at significant risk of persecution and violent reprisals," the official warned.
