Three people were killed Saturday when a small plane crashed during its descent into an airport in Tennessee, US, officials said.

A Mooney M20TN aircraft departed from Alabama and crashed south of the Upper Cumberland Regional Airport in Sparta around 11:50 a.m. local time (1650GMT), NBC News reported, citing officials.

All three passengers on board the four-seater plane were killed.

Airport Director Dean Selby said the Memphis Air Traffic Control Center alerted the airport after losing contact with the plane.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the crash and said that it, along with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), will investigate it. The NTSB will lead the probe.
