Several popular beaches in Los Angeles County have been placed under a public health advisory due to elevated bacteria levels in ocean water.

Authorities issued an updated warning March 17, urging residents and visitors to avoid swimming, surfing and other water activities as exposure may cause illness, while unusually high temperatures, up to 35 degrees above average, according to Fox’ Weather, are expected between Thursday and Saturday.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said recent water samples showed bacteria levels exceeding state health standards, increasing the risk of illness.

The advisory covers multiple locations, including Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro and Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey, where entire swimming areas are affected.

Additional warnings are in place for parts of Santa Monica Beach, Venice Beach and several Malibu locations.

Areas near the Santa Monica Pier, Topanga Canyon Beach, Surfrider Beach and Escondido State Beach are also included, particularly around storm drains and creeks where runoff may impact water quality.

Officials noted that elevated bacteria levels can result from stormwater runoff following rainfall, sewage spills or leaks, and animal waste from birds, pets or marine mammals. Urban runoff from rivers and creeks can also carry contaminants into coastal waters, while warmer temperatures and decomposing organic matter can further promote bacterial growth.

Health officials warned that exposure to contaminated ocean water can lead to stomach issues, fever and infections affecting the eyes, ears, nose or throat. Children, the elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health conducts routine water testing and issues advisories when bacteria levels exceed safety thresholds, noting that conditions may change rapidly depending on environmental factors.

Officials said the advisory is not a full beach closure, and beachgoers are encouraged to check the county’s public health website for updates before visiting affected areas.
